The following are samples of birth, marriage and death records I've found online recently. They seem to have been started around 1905. By that I mean, events before that year (i.e. George Robinson and Anna Proctor's marriage in 1883) have a recorded date of 1905 or so on the cards. Later events (Grampa Rob's marriage in 1915) are usually dated the year of the event. By dated, I mean recorded by the town/county clerk or State? Registrar whose signature appears on the card. I have seen these birth/marriage/death record cards only for the state of New Hampshire. So it seems that around 1905 the state of New Hampshire decided that all these records needed to be recorded at the state level. Prior to that, perhaps these records were only kept locally by the town or county. I have seen many examples of town birth records, for instance, with entries line after line - usually in chronological order. So, I'm thinking that the clerks transferred older (sometimes almost illegible) records from the book pages to these cards. I imagine that this transferring of information from book to card resulted in the occasional human error, but even with that chance of error these records (some are filled out more completely than others) contain all kinds of interesting and valuable information.
